JH Coaches History...

H Coaches, originally known as Jim Hughes Coaches, was founded in the 1970s by the late Mr. Jim Hughes – a well-known and respected figure in the local coach industry. The company operated for many years from a depot beneath the Queen Alexandra Bridge in Sunderland.

Following Jim’s sudden passing in 2010, and with no family members available to continue the business, the company – then operating with just seven coaches – was sold in 2012 to the Shipley family. Jim and Ian Shipley had long known each other through their shared passion for the coach industry, often travelling together on ski tours to the Alps. During these trips, the idea of eventually selling the business to Ian’s son John was often discussed, and though it didn’t happen exactly as planned, the transition did take place, honouring Jim’s wishes.

Under the new ownership, the company was rebranded as JH Coaches and introduced a fresh gold livery – an intentional symbol of quality and reliability that quickly resonated with customers.

In 2014, JH Coaches relocated to a new site in Birtley, where the business continued to grow at pace. In 2024, the company moved again – this time to a purpose-built, larger depot designed to support its growing operations. This state-of-the-art facility includes:

  • A fully refurbished four-bay workshop with two MOT pit lanes

  • A dedicated ATF lane and 3-bay vehicle inspection pit

  • A 55,000-litre on-site fuel tank

  • A brand new automatic bus wash

  • A spacious 2.5-acre yard for vehicle parking and movements

Today, JH Coaches operates a fleet of up to 70 vehicles and is proud to be a member of The Coach Travel Group, a national network of trusted, independent coach operators. With continual investment in fleet, facilities and technology, JH Coaches has firmly established itself as one of the North East’s leading coach companies, known for its modern, high-quality vehicles and exceptional customer service.
